Back to School Bliss- ADD style
1. Tap into Technology- The High School ADD’er
One of the coolest things about being a high school kid with ADD is that you can tune out more than the average bear- meaning we know you can tune out your parents and your chores, occasional nagging from mom for example- but you can also learn to tune out distractions, buckle down and get focused. one of the ways to do this is to fine tune your study skills. High Schoolers with ADD often complain about a lot of things that cause them issue with their ADD, but the issue we hear about most often is “note taking”. The coolest gadget on the planet right now, although not made for the ADD’er specifically, it might as well have been- and that is the livescribe pulse pen. If your ADD’er is losing focus during class, can’t remember important details, or is having difficulty with keeping up with note taking- this gadget is perfect for them. Easy to use, Easy to keep track of- this pen does what every HS kid wants but can’t do– it listens to EVERY THING THE TEACHER SAYS and listens well. All the student has to do is turn it on, and write their name at the top of the paper or date or class. The pen does the rest. Although we teach our coaching students how to take notes and how to use the pen to fill in the gaps, it essentially keeps up with the teacher while they are learning. We call it the forgiving pen- it basically listens, records and ties the words it hears to whatever the student writes- exactly at the moment the pen is moving. Later the student can play back (even in slow motion- Amen in Spanish class- who understands that teacher anyway!) and the notes are saved digitally on the computer. So even if the student loses their notebook after the pen has been downloaded-they have everything. With livescribe’s forum, a student can even share his notes or lack thereof for comments on the secure site for other students. The pen goes for about $200 for the good size at Target or from the manufacturer itself. A great find. We teach our students how to take notes and how to focus and listen with specific working memory strategies. Then we introduce the pen and 9/10 times, the student is not only motivated to take notes, but absolutely relieved. Digital recorders are great, but this pen has them beat- we don’t work for the company-but we might as well- we have sent so many of our ADHD/ADD clients to purchase the pen and have trained them to use it as an ADD strategy.
